how to know if my tragus is infected? |

|
Hi, I am new to the forum, and was just hoping to get some questions answered. I got my left tragus pierced a little over a month ago. For the first couple of
weeks I had no problems, but just a week or two ago I started noticing that a small bump was forming on the back part of my tragus. It keeps scabbing and then
the scab will fall off and it will re scab, it is reddish in color, and is growing larger. My aftercare was so-so. I did sea salt soaks every day for about
two weeks and then I sort of started to get a little lazy, unfortunately. Also, as hard as I tried not to, I found myself touching my piercing more than I
probably should have. So now, I have a rather large bump on the back of my tragus. It hurts sometimes (including an annoying stinging after I do my sea salt
soaks), and just looks like a huge bubble, almost the size of the barbel. My question is, how will I know if it is infected or not? What are the signs that it
is infected? I'm hoping this is just a normal bump, and will hopefully go away after more of the sea salt soaks. How would I tell the difference between a
normal bump and an infected tragus? Sorry this is so long!

The bump is definitely not a sign of infection. You wouldn't be asking this if you were actually experiencing an infection, trust me!
Signs of infection include extreme heat and swelling (not a bump, but swelling over the whole area), a bad smell, BRIGHT red or green lymph, and flu-like symptoms such as fever, aches, etc. If you do experience these signs, do NOT take out the jewelry! You can trap the infection under the skin and cause a painful abscess. Go to the doctor and get a prescription antibiotic, as a topical cream won't cut it. But you don;t mention any of the signs of infection, so i think you're probably just fine. A tragus takes 8 months or more to heal, being such a tough little piece of cartilage! You just need to be continuing your aftercare, diligently, for the remainder of the healing period and you should be okay. |
